Thank you so very much for the honor of serving you as your District Attorney. As many of you may know, I grew up in Fayetteville. Back then, Fayetteville was a tiny town. If I needed clothes, we came to Griffin and bought them at Morrow Powell. Before school each year, my mother and I joined the mob of shoppers at the store now known as “The Sock Shoppe.” Griffin had a Coca Cola Bottling Company, so sometimes the bottom of the Coke bottle said, “Griffin, Ga.” The Griffin Bears were champions on the football field. In short, I grew up with great respect for Spalding County.
I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. In 1984, when I began the practice of law, I was in awe of Judge Whalen. The Spalding County Courthouse, four stories tall with marble floors and walls, was spectacular. It is a privilege that I treasure to serve as the Spalding County District Attorney.
It is also a major challenge. The good citizens of Spalding County endure far more than their share of crime. My hat is off to the police and deputies who deal with drunks and perverts and drug dealers and thieves at the street level. I’ve seen the videos. They deserve our zealous support.
In the District Attorney’s Office we strive constantly to be the prosecutors that Spalding needs and deserves. We aggressively prosecute violent criminals and sex offenders. We work with law enforcement to get the drug dealers. We now have twice as many investigators and twice as many victim advocates as were in Spalding when I took office. We’ve added case management and document production software that has made us more efficient. I think our service to the public and to the courts is better than it has ever been in Spalding County.
But, we can become better. If I am honored to serve a second term, there are some improvements I plan to make. More frequent court sessions may be required. That would save the expense of housing so many prisoners at the jail as they await trial and would allow more manageable trial calendars. It would also enable us to have better communication with law enforcement officers and other witnesses and decrease the inconvenience to them caused by criminal trial calendars with over 350 cases on them.
I am proud of the relationships between our office and the different law enforcement agencies in the circuit. One of the reasons for that is the position of Law Enforcement Liaison. I would like to build upon our progress by creating a position that focuses entirely upon the needs of the Griffin Police Department and the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office. The benefits to the public would be well worth the expense.
Finally, this is YOUR office. I welcome your input as to how we can serve you better. It will take all of us to Guard What’s Ours—our families, our property, our way of life—from criminals.
