Especially for the Citizens of Upson County

This ticker will turn red when there is an urgent alert issued by law enforcement in your county:

Before you were kind enough to elect me as the Upson County District Attorney, I had had few contacts with the county. Getting to know the people of Upson County and enjoying the beauty of this place has been one of the greatest pleasures of my first term serving you.

When I was a kid in Fayette in the 1960’s, everyone knew everybody. We all talked with the same accent. We valued our independence from Atlanta. As you know, Fayette has changed into a metropolitan part of Atlanta. That has some benefits. But, Upson County reminds me of things that I love about my childhood and I feel at home here.

I’ve made it a point to staff the Thomaston office with Upson County residents. I’m very proud of the service we are able to provide the Sheriff’s Department and the Police Department with natives who know the officers and deputies and care deeply about protecting the community. They live their lives “Guarding What’s Ours.” And they’re very good at what they do.

Here’s just one example. In 2006 only four prosecutors in the state were recognized by Atlanta Lawyer Magazine as “Rising Stars”. Two of those selected were our prosecutors. One, Heath English, is a lifelong Upson County resident and the senior attorney in the Upson Office. Last year Heath was again honored as a “Rising Star”.

Here’s another example. Mary Ann Bragg killed her husband. It looked like she might get away with it. Your District Attorney’s Office teamed up with local law enforcement to hunt down witnesses and secure evidence. The case went to trial. CourtTV televised the conviction for murder.

I would encourage you to ask anybody familiar with the courts how we’re doing. Ask judges. Ask law enforcement. Ask bailiffs. Ask clerks. I’m very confident that they will tell you that our Upson County staff is attentive to the needs of the citizens and as skilled in handling cases as any prosecutor’s office around.

I hope you will give us the privilege of continuing our mandate of “Guarding What’s Ours”.
